It is the policy of the Department of Motor Vehicles, based on guidance and recommendations from the Medical Advisory Board, that drivers who come to the attention of DMV after experiencing a crash due to a pedal application error or runaway crash while fully conscious will be asked to submit a medical report that includes tests of executive function and information on peripheral sensation.
Drivers whose medical report indicates cognitive changes or a loss of executive function will be suspended for their own safety as well as the safety of others. Drivers who have intact executive function will be required to take the skills examination.
Drivers with evidence of lower extremity dysfunction will be referred to a Certified Driving Rehabilitation Specialist (CDRS) for evaluation of driving safety and possible need for adaptive equipment. Once evaluated, restrictions will be imposed based on the recommendations contained in the CDRS evaluation. A final skills examination performed by DMV will also be required.
Additional Documentation
DMV reserves the right to request that a driver provide additional information from a specialist in order to determine the severity of the condition and to assess the driver's ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
DMV may also impose additional requirements on the individual depending on the information received.
