If you operate solely intrastate, you must renew your Virginia Operating Authority Certificate, License or Permit, and Operating Authority Registration.
Operating Authority Renewal
A renewal application will be sent to you prior to the expiration of your authority. There is no fee to renew your operating authority. You may mail your completed application to the address shown on the application or take it to any DMV customer service center. Once your application is processed, you will receive a renewal confirmation card.
If you fail to renew your operating authority, you will be required to apply for original authority and comply with all of the application requirements.
Operating Authority Registration
For vehicles NOT registered under IRP (apportioned registration), the operating authority registration expires at the same time that the vehicle registration expires. A renewal notice will be mailed prior to the expiration date of your registration. You can renew by mail, online or at any customer service center.
Although vehicles registered under IRP are required to obtain Intrastate Operating Authority, they are no longer required to be issued corresponding registration credentials.
Annual Fees
Annual fees required for vehicles performing transportation authorized by a certificate or permit are $3 per vehicle for passenger carriers and $10 per vehicle for property carriers when applicable. The $10 annual fee for property-carrying vehicles will no longer apply to passenger cars, motorcycles, autocycles, mopeds or vehicles with a GVWR of 10,000 pounds or less. Fees will be included in your vehicle registration renewal fee. You will not be charged this fee if you also operate interstate.
Renewal Notice Methods
Vehicle registration renewal notices are sent by mail. If you would like to be reminded by text or email instead, sign up for E-notifications.
Important: The vehicle registration renewal for your IRP vehicles has not changed.
