Virginia Excise Tax System (VAETS) is the primary filing and payment system for the Motor Fuels Tax and Wholesale Tax programs.
To apply for a license, file returns and pay taxes, you must first set up an account in VAETS. To set up an account in VAETS, a company must first designate a primary account holder. The primary account holder must establish their company's VAETS account by providing the following information:
- Customer username
- Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN)
- Email address
The system sends an email to the user with a security code that they will use to verify their identity. Once their identity is verified, the primary account user can continue setting up their company's account in VAETS.
Primary account users may create additional user accounts for other company officials to perform fuel tax license, filing, and payment transactions. If a primary account user creates an additional user account, VAETS will send an email containing a security code to the additional user, who can use it to set up their VAETS account.
Once your company's VAETS account is established, you may apply for a Fuels Tax or Wholesale Tax license within your VAETS account. If your license application is approved, you may download your license certificate from VAETS. All tax returns and tax payments are to be processed in VAETS. DMV sends important correspondence through VAETS, so please check your VAETS account regularly to see if you have any correspondence.
