You have reached this page because you must visit a DMV customer service center to renew your driver's license or CDL. You have options:
- stop by any day we’re open
- make an appointment
For information on why you must renew in person, see our online eligibility and legal presence requirements. If you're renewing a commercial driver's license (CDL), see Commercial Driver's License.
Choose the renewal option that’s right for you:
REAL ID
Effective May 7, 2025, you will need a REAL ID driver's license, or other form of approved identification like a U.S. passport, to board a domestic flight or to access a secure federal facility. REAL ID is optional in Virginia. If you don’t want one, you may renew your standard license.
Save time and start the process online! Fill out your application before your visit and learn what documents to bring.
To apply for a REAL ID, you must visit a DMV customer service center in person with the required documents. Walk-in service is offered Monday – Saturday (at offices with Saturday hours). You also have the option to make an appointment for services Monday – Friday.
Note: Some military bases may no longer accept standard licenses or IDs which display "Federal Limits Apply.” Please verify identification requirements before your visit.
Standard license
If you don't need a REAL ID license, bring your current ID and a completed DL 1P form to any DMV customer service center or mobile office.
Renew Soon
We encourage you to renew your license or ID by the expiration date. After expiration, you may be required to visit a DMV customer service center and present proof of your legal presence in the United States. For a complete list of acceptable documents, see "Acceptable Documents for Obtaining a Driver's License or Photo ID Card" (DMV 141).
Fee
The renewal fee is the same as the licensing fee. For example, a standard eight year driver's license with no classes or endorsements costs $32. You may pay your fees with cash, money order, check, debit card or major credit card.
Organ Donation
When you renew your driver's license, you'll be asked if you wish to become an organ donor. Find out more about this worthy cause at Organ Donation.
