RICHMOND - The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has identified a new location, 1201 South Church Street, for the Smithfield Customer Service Center (CSC) and will break ground in fall 2021.
All DMV offices closed March 18, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. CSCs reopened in phases beginning May 18, 2020; however, the Smithfield office remained closed as its small lobby and lack of a public restroom provided inadequate conditions to keep customers safe in a pandemic.
"Smithfield residents will soon have a brand new, convenient DMV location in town, which will provide necessary Commonwealth of Virginia services," said Senator Tommy Norment.
The new CSC will be more than double the size of the old location, at approximately 4,800 square feet, and will have seven service windows to serve a higher volume of customers. The facility will also have a public restroom, and a rear employee entrance/exit.
"I know my constituents will enjoy the larger, more modern facility as they obtain their DMV services close to home," said Delegate Emily Brewer.
Until the new office opens, customers who typically use the Smithfield CSC continue to have several options for service. More than 50 transactions are now available online at dmvNOW.com. Customers are encouraged to conduct transactions online or by mail, when possible. For those who need in-person service, the Hampton, Portsmouth, and Suffolk CSCs are the closest offices serving appointments. All are within 30 minutes of Smithfield.
For vehicle-related transactions, customers can also visit DMV Select partners. The Newport News/City Hall, Hampton, Portsmouth, and Norfolk DMV Select locations are all open by appointment. DMV Connect also regularly visits the area to assist customers.
"We are pleased to continue to offer essential DMV services to customers in the Smithfield area through alternate methods and locations, while we construct a new location to more permanently serve the area," said DMV Commissioner Richard D. Holcomb.
