RICHMOND - More than 12,000 customers have reserved their spot in line online via the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles' convenient new option for speedy same-day walk-in service.
Through the new service, launched statewide in December 2022, customers virtually sign into DMV's service queue and receive a ticket number without waiting in a physical line.
"Customers have made it clear to us that they want options. We are always listening and working to meet their needs," said Acting DMV Commissioner Linda Ford. "We understand the need for in-person service is essential for some transactions and, when you can't plan ahead with an appointment, this new option offers convenience and flexibility."
As a reminder, to save your spot for same day service, visit our Locations webpage and find your local office through a zip code search or the drop down menu on the right. When the pop-up appears on the map, click the location link to go to your local office's webpage. Scan the QR code or text the code to 89247 and follow the prompts. Each office has a unique code, so be sure to scan or text the code for the office you will visit.
Once you arrive at the DMV office, text “I am here” to activate your reservation, so you can be called for service. Customers who checked in online must be present in the office by 4:30 p.m. on the day they reserved a spot in order to be served.
If you forget to reserve your spot, you can scan the QR code in our lobby when you arrive and get in line for service. Just follow the prompts and you'll receive your ticket number via text message to your phone.
The options to plan an in-person visit well ahead by appointment or not plan at all and walk in are still available for customers.
