DMV Makes Safety a Priority with Enhanced Employee Training Effort

DMVs Will Open Late from May 7-9

May 3, 2024

RICHMOND – The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is alerting the public to upcoming delayed openings at our customer service centers (CSC) from May 7-9, 2024. DMV staff is taking a brief step away from the counters to engage in vital safety training. For this important three-day effort, DMV has strategically scheduled office hours to ensure service remains available in every district.

“We believe that good customer service extends far beyond just getting you in and out of the door with time to spare. We prioritize the safety of our customers and employees when you come in to visit DMV,” said DMV Commissioner Gerald Lackey. “DMV offices across the state served over 4.6 million people last year, and we want to ensure we are prepared to the best of our ability if one of our customers is in need. But this isn’t just about fire drills and medical emergencies, we also want to make use of our large statewide footprint to combat human trafficking. By training our employees to recognize signs of those who may need help, we can be extra eyes and ears looking to intervene for those who may need it.”

CSCs will close on a rolling schedule to optimize customer options in each district. Each office will be closed in the morning, reopening at 1 p.m., on one day between May 7-9, and nearby offices will be open to support the closed office. Online transactions will not be affected and those who have vehicle-specific transactions are encouraged to visit a DMV Select. The below schedule shows the specific closure days for each of our 75 CSCs.

To skip the line and ensure your visit won’t be affected, we encourage customers to make an appointment before you come in. And don’t forget that over 50 transactions can be completed on our website anytime from anywhere. Visit our website to find the DMV Select and full-service DMV locations near you.
