You have reached this page because you may be eligible to renew your ID card online.
Adult ID cards expire on your birthday at the end of the period of years which the card has been issued. ID cards are valid for a maximum of eight years.
Choose the option that’s right for you:
REAL ID
Starting May 7, 2025, you’ll need a REAL ID compliant driver’s license or identification card, or another federally approved form of identification like a U.S. Passport, to board a domestic flight or enter a secure federal facility. REAL ID is optional in Virginia. If you don't need a REAL ID or already have one, you may continue renewing your ID online.
Save time and start the process online! Fill out your application before your visit and learn what documents to bring.
To apply for a REAL ID, you must visit a DMV customer service center in person with the required documents. Walk-in service is now offered Monday – Saturday (at offices with Saturday hours). Or, you can make an appointment for services Monday – Friday.
Note: Some military bases may no longer accept standard licenses or IDs that display “Federal Limits Apply.” Please verify identification requirements prior to your visit.
Standard ID Card
If you don’t need a REAL ID, you may renew online to receive a standard ID card valid for eight years.
Renew Soon
We encourage you to renew your ID by the expiration date. After expiration, you may be required to visit a customer service center and present proof of your legal presence in the United States (if you have not previously done so). For a complete list of acceptable documents or information on getting a driver's license or identification card, refer to DMV 141.
Fee
The renewal fee is the same as the original ID card fee. For example, an 8-year ID card costs $16. You may pay your fees with cash, money order, check, debit card, or major credit card.
Organ Donation
When you renew your ID card, you will be asked if you wish to become an organ donor. Find out more about this worthy cause at Organ Donation.
