Prospective Purchaser Inquiry - Introduction

Background

Prospective Purchaser Inquiry (PPI) allows individual or business customers to obtain information on a vehicle that they are considering purchasing. Use this application to find information such as odometer reading at time of titling, special notes about water damage or demolition status, vehicle history, and more.

What You'll Need
  • the vehicle identification number (VIN), make model and year for the vehicle (as provided by the vehicle owner)
  • Discover, MasterCard, VISA or American Express and the expiration date. You may also use a debit card displaying the VISA or MasterCard logo.
Printing and Delivery

You must be able to print the document at the time of the request. DMV does not store the PPI online for later retrieval. Try a test print to be sure your printer can print the documents.

How it Works

The fee for a PPI is $12.00. The fee is required even if a) no vehicle history information is found because DMV has nothing on file, or B) you type in and submit incorrect information. See "Keying VIN Information" below for some helpful hints.

Keying VIN Information

The VIN must match exactly! Manufacturers never assign VINs containing the letters "O" or "I". Be sure to enter the VIN carefully and be aware of characters that look very similar, such as the letter "O" and the number "0", the letter "I" and the number "1", the letter "Z" and the number "2", and so on.

If you are unsure of the VIN, you may want to contact the owner again to confirm the exact VIN before using this feature.
