Improve Air Quality: Get Vehicle Emissions Inspections
Complete Inspection Before Renewing Registration
RICHMOND - As efforts to improve air quality continue around the Commonwealth, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) reminds Northern Virginia residents of Virginia's emissions inspection requirements before vehicle registration or renewal. Vehicles are the single greatest source of pollutants in this region of the state.
Vehicles garaged in the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, Prince William, and Stafford and the cities of Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas, and Manassas Park must be inspected by a certified emissions inspection station before your vehicle registration can be renewed. Inspections are valid for two years. Once your vehicle is inspected, your DMV record is updated by the emissions station.
DMV will not register or reregister vehicles garaged in these localities that have not passed the emissions inspection. To avoid delays in obtaining your vehicle registration from DMV, have your emissions inspection completed before you apply for registration or renewal. Once your inspection is complete, you can renew your vehicle registration online at www.dmvNOW.com. It's easy and only takes a few minutes.
For more information about the emissions inspection program or to find a certified inspector in your area, visit the Department of Environmental Quality’s website at www.deq.state.va.us/Programs/AirCheckVirginia.aspx.
